Woolly Mammoth Tusks
This exquisite collection of European Woolly Mammoth tusks showcases eight specimens, ranging from infant to juvenile to adult. Woolly Mammoths evolved large, dramatically curved tusks as their overall body size decreased. These adaptations proved advantageous for survival in increasingly cold conditions. Composed of dentin, a material closely resembling modern elephant ivory, these tusks served multiple purposes. They were used for digging in the ground to uncover food, stripping bark from trees for consumption, and defending territory and mates.
