Woolly Mammoth Tusks
This fine collection of European Woolly Mammoth tusks showcases 8 different tusks. From infant to juvenile to adult tusks. Wolly Mammoth developed large tusks with a more dramatic curvature allowing their overall body size to decrease. These changes were advantages in surviving the increasingly cold conditions. Their tusks were made out of a material called dentin, better known as ivory. Very similar to those of elephants today. Their tusks were generally used to dig in the ground to find food, rub the bark off of trees to eat, and defend their territory/mates.
