European Acheulean

This is the period in the Lower Paleolithic following the Abbevillian. It was represented by the use of soft hammerstones in hand axe production made of chipped stone, bone, antler, or wood. It is considered to be an archaeological industry of stone tool manufacturing characterized by distinctive oval and pear-shaped “hand axes” associated with Homo erectus and derived species such as homo heidelbergensis.
